Celtic Tour 2010

Billy and Katriona Shanahan and their intrepid team of “Blazing Bikers” motorbike charity run enthusiasts are taking on a new, novel and innovative May Bank holiday 2010 Charity Road Run.

The eagerly awaited announcement sees a team of men, women, bikers and pillions including a few visually impaired head across the channel to Wales for the aptly named “Celtic Tour”.

The three stages listed below will see the charity bikers ride a total of 560 undulating miles in Wales.
There will be a tour of the Isle of Anglesey and a brief cross over the English border at Hay-On-Wye!.

The Highlight of the Celtic Tour will be the Memorial Charity bike ride on Saturday in memory of a Welsh folk hero , former Wales and British Lions Rugby star Ray Gravell.

Ray had very close links to the charity benefiting from this event- the National Council for the Blind of Ireland for many years.
We hope local charity bikers from all over Wales will join this rally and raise funds for local Welsh Charities on the day.

The stages will take the tour down the Welsh west coast via the “Isle of Anglesey and the beautiful quaint village of Betwys Y Coed on day one, a scenic ride down to Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli, day two, the big event will take the team east from our official startline at Ray Gravell’s statue in Parc Y Scarlets. Then heading via Brecon north on the Welsh/English border with a slight incursion onto English soil close to Hay-On-Wye!!! We will then continue on north to a well deserved lunch and rest point in Welshpool, before returning south through the central and wonderful heartland of wales including stops in Rhayader and Buith Wells!
We will finish again at the Stradey Park Hotel our general HQ for the Celtic Tour.

The route for day 3 will be “West is best” this will take the bikers along the south coast of Wales via Carmathen, Milford Haven and Haversford west to our finish line at the Irish Ferries terminal at Pembroke.

Our total is 560 miles!!

A total of 125 bikers will travel accompanied by a support crew from all over Ireland. A fundraising target of €500 per biker pps and €300 per pillion pps is required which can be raised through sponsorship.

Book early to secure your place by deposit as interest is already surpassing previous Blazing Bikers Charity Tours.

Press Release from Diabetes UK Cymbu:

Bikers are being asked to sign up for Grav’s Great Bike Run from Llanelli on Sunday 2nd May to raise funds for Diabetes UK Cymru and The National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI).

The ride is being held in memory of rugby legend Ray Gravell, who had Type 2 diabetes and tragically died of a heart attack in 2007 aged just 56.

It has been organised by Ireland’s The Blazing Bikers, which raises money for NCBI, jointly with Diabetes UK Cymru.

The Blazing Bikers will be bringing 120 bikers across from Ireland for the ride, including visually-impaired pillion passengers.

The 252-mile ride will take bikers from the Llanelli Scarlets RFC to the Welsh borders and through West Wales before finishing at Llanelli’s Stradey Park Hotel.

Money raised by the ride will help Diabetes UK Cymru to provide advice, support and information to people diagnosed with diabetes across Wales and their families.

Dai Williams, National Director of Diabetes UK Cymru, said:
“We are delighted to be working with the National Council for the Blind of Ireland to support Grav’s Great Bike Run in memory of Ray Gravell.”

“Ray was a wonderful man who was treasured throughout Wales and worked closely with Diabetes UK Cymru in his later life after being diagnosed with diabetes.”

“The ride from Llanelli is an excellent way to remember Ray and his legacy.”

“Money raised by the event will help us to support the 146,000 people living with diabetes across Wales and fund vital research into the condition.”

Eamon Duffy, from the National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI), said:

“The National Council for the Blind of Ireland is delighted to join forces with Diabetes UK Cymru as joint organisers of this unique Celtic fundraiser.”

“I was one of Ray Gravell’s 1,000 best friends and I was honored to be his best man when Mari and Ray married on the mountain all those years ago. Part of Wales and Ireland died with his sad, sad passing.”

“There is a strong link between vision impairment and diabetes. If this charity bike ride by The Blazing Bikers raises some much-needed funds and promotes awareness in Ireland and Wales it will be a great result all round.”

“We encourage all bikers at all levels in Wales to join Grav’s Great Bike Run. We will all be winners.”
